About Us

A short history:

St. Gregory's Episcopal Church was originally organized as Ascension Chapel, a parochial chapel of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Muskegon. on April 3, 1955.  The first Eucharist was held on Palm Sunday in the Walburn Funeral Home.  The Rev. David Bryce, Curate of St. Paul's, officiated.

The parish moved to Maple Grove School in September of 1955, and changed its name to St. Gregory's Mission in November.

St. Gregory's became a Diocesan Mission in January of 1956, and a Parish Church in January 1957.   February saw the groundbreaking for the first unit of the new church.  Bishop Dudley B. McNeil dedicated the building and furnishings in September of 1957.  The groundbreaking for the church addition, which is the present sanctuary, was in February 1963 and dedicated on December 8, 1963

The latest addition, which greatly improves the usefulness of the entire building as well as making all the building handicapped accessible, was dedicated by Bishop Lee on February 22, 1999. A lovely Memorial Garden, one of the first in this area, continues to be available to members and friends of St. Gregory's.

During the last 50 years, St. Gregory's has been led by seven different clergy.  Father William Fleener was the longest-tenured rector (22 years). Father John David was our most recent rector, retiring after 10 years.  Father David Brower served as our Interim Rector until Easter Sunday, 2009.

Who We Are
Our Parish Community:

St. Gregory's is a welcoming church that encourages diversity.  We are a caring and compassionate congregation.  Parishioners have a true sense of belonging.  Today we are a community of about 96 families.  We strive to attract new members and families.  We enjoy programs for families within the parish such as "Picnic Mass in the Park" to kick off Sunday School in the fall, a Thanksgiving Parish Dinner on the Sunday before Thanksgiving, other potluck suppers, and a family Eucharist at 5:30 pm on Christmas Eve.

We want to offer opportunities for spiritual formation and growth that meets the needs of our own people as well as those who might come to visit and become new members.

Our Worship Schedule:

Traditionally, St. Gregory's is an Anglo-Catholic parish celebrating the Eucharist every Sunday morning.  We have an 8:00 am and 10:00 am service.  Rite II is used most of the year, with the exceptions of Advent and Lent, when we use Rite i.  Mid-week Eucharist is held at 5:30 pm each Wednesday.

On Ash Wedesday we have the imposition of Ashes.  Holy Week is observed on Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday.  Easter morning and the Christmas Midnight Mass are full celebrations for St. Gregory's.

Our Sunday School Program meets on Sunday mornings at 9:45 am.  During the Peace, the children join their parents in the church for Eucharist.  The 3rd Sunday of each month, during the school year, is Youth Sunday.  Our young people are the greeters and lesson readers, the participate in the offering, bring the elements to the altar and passing the offertory plates.  We welcome their special music from time to time.  This gives our young people an opportunity to fully participate in the service, providing education and a feeling of being a part of the parish.

We have a good and active choir, especially for the size of our congregation.  We are always looking for more people to join the choir.  Our music is enhanced by a 100+ year old tracker pipe organ with beautiful tone qualities.

The rector is assisted by several Lay Eucharistic Ministers, lay lectors that rotate Sundays and services and by a small core of Acolytes.  We recently instituted Eucharistic Visitors that take Holy Communion to our shut-ins as requested.

Our Altar Guild is active with preparation/cleanup for each service.

Even though we are accustomed to the traditional Eucharist, we are open to modern forms of worship as well.  We have a contemporary music service once a month.
